"HFV has no HFV. But somehow has 2 motorcycles" (hondasfordsvolvo)

I don’t want to give it up but being a dad and a home owner I just don’t think I’m going to have the time to deal with it. It would be different if I could have it has a thrid car, a project to tinker with, but I can’t really afford that and don’t have the space. So im looking for that pie in the sky next car. Basically it needs to be cheap, fun, cheap to own, reliable, and also fun something I can RallyX, drive every day, and hopefully learn to drift in. It’s a lot to ask on one car. My original thought was NB Miata. But my wife shot that down real quick. I’m still working that angle though, maybe I’ll just use my mother’s stubernness and wear her down till she’s okay with it. Eh.
The compromise would be something like this. An almost too cheap E46. I’m a bit scared of a BMW to be honest, but a RWD fun focuses car that still has 4 seats. The odometer reading being wrong is scary especially without a decent explanation.

It if I’m being totally realistic I should be buying something more like this, but it breaks my heart to think of going from a turbocharged AWD car to a something this boring.
Oh and check out thing Camaro. If it was 3000 dollars cheaper it’d be on my list.

Man when you said odometer issue I thought it was gonna be like when my mom bought her low miles 190E and the guy selling it accidentally swapped two numbers or just rounded up when doing the write up.
Having 71000 miles on the record before 70600 is an honestly stupid mark against it.

What is the specific reason why the wife shot down the Mx-5?
Will she also drive it?

1. “It’s ugly”
2. It’s a convertible
3. It’s a 2 seater
4. It’s tiny

1. It’s beautiful
2. Convertibles are good.
3. How many more seats do you need?
4. Not tiny, it’s actually just big enough.

My suggestion? Acura TSX or TL. Fun, fuel efficient, available manual, very reliable (I’ve had mine for 7200 miles, no issues at all and it has 194,300 miles on it). Can confirm it would be good at RallyX through thorough country road testing. Insurance is reasonable too. If nothing else, they’ll last you long enough until you can get a bit more expendable income.

I desire RWD. Never had it, and I want to expand my horizons.

That BMW is a $500 car. It’s been wrecked, it was originally white by the looks of it, it’s been modified (probably poorly), it’s missing pieces under the hood. The odometer thing is an instant no. Odometer tampering is fraud. People go to jail for it. You don’t want any part of that. If I can tell all this from shitty photos...

Why not a G35/G37? At one point they rivaled BMW in driving dynamics and being Nissans I predict that less will go wrong (but you might want to confirm that). Besides, the VQ engines sound pretty good (or at least distinctive), and they’re plenty practical!

It’s on the list. It’s hard to find a clean one that hasn’t been modified to hell.

Yeah, it would fit in with the e36 i looked at a few years ago. Beat, poorly modified and lots of rust lurking in hidden places.

Ah, they’re dime a dozen in the Bay since they’ve been the default FOB car of choice for the past decade—that honor has moved on to the IS it seems.

I guess they aren’t that hard to find, if you want an automatic

I think this guy’s price is a little high. But this would fit your enthusiast oriented desires. And I prefer the e39 to the e46. https://minneapolis.craigslist.org/dak/cto/d/2002-bmw-525i-package-5-speed/6425593099.html the ad at least sounds like he treats her well. Nice color too.

Miata does fit all of your requirements... I’d bug the wife until she sees the light.
Rangers are great.... But they’re not fun to drive

You’re posts are my inspiration. I even said “that’s it I’m buying a Miata” on a post of yours a few weeks ago.

Obviously your mileage may vary but consider this... My Miata, that’s 24 years old, salvage title, over 300,000 miles, tons of janky things like the locking wrench holding my battery terminals in place, and absolutely beat on through literally every single weather condition and driving surface.... Hasn’t had a single thing go wrong besides a brake light. 40,000 miles on an objectively not well-kept beat-to-shit Miata and it just keeps going, with zero issue. And on the day that it finally does have a major issue.... I’ll be able to fix everything with a 10mm wrench and some quick googling.
To me, that’s the ideal “fun” car

Getting on the “eh’ a GOOD automatic transmission isn’t the end of the world” train as well? Our I6 auto wagons seem to slowly change us.

It was a huge compromise, but I6+wagon+RWD supersedes my preference of 3 pedals.

Same here! Also BMW service history and a one owner car with the specs I wanted vs. having to hunt down one of the very rare manuals in questionable condition.
